No country has celebrated and persevered its writers like Russia. For a long time freedom had only one place here: literature. Following the footsteps of the most famous poets, the film portrays two centuries of Russian literature.

Der russische Schriftsteller und Literaturkritiker (u.a. "Der Prozess beginnt", "Im Schatten Gogols"), aufgenommen am 14. November 1973. Seine fr¸hen Werke verˆffentlichte er unter dem Pseudonym Abram Terz im westlichen Ausland. Daf¸r wurde er in der Sowjetunion verurteilt und kam 1965 bis 1971 in Haft. 1973 emigrierte Sinjawski nach Frankreich.
